The Galaxy Note 9 will not feature under-display fingerprint scanner
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated flagship phones on the market. The upcoming phone is expected to be Samsung’s ultimate weapon to take on Apple’s 2018 iPhone models. According to tech experts, the Note 9 will fix issues found on the Note 8, while introducing a lot of new exciting features.
Rumors regarding Samsung’s next generation Galaxy Note have started to heat up for months, hinting at the impressive features and new design coming in the phone. One such feature is an in-display fingerprint scanner. In reality, Samsung was previously rumored to add a fingerprint scanner under the display of the Note 8, but it was nowhere to be found at launch.
Samsung’s main rival, Apple was also rumored to include the technology under
the display of iPhones, but it seems that Apple needs more time to work on the
tech. Last week, rumors claimed that the Galaxy Note 9 might be the first
Samsung-branded phone to feature an in-display scanner.
However, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, KGI Securities research analyst best
known for his accurate forecasts when it comes to Apple devices, the upcoming
Galaxy Note 9 will not feature an in-display fingerprint sensor as previously
expected. Kuo claims that Samsung needs more time to make sure a fingerprint
scanner works properly under the display.
In reality, in-display fingerprint scanner is not something new on the
market, as the Vivo X20 Plus UD is now the first phone to come with an
in-display fingerprint sensor. Kuo says that Samsung has been working on an
in-display fingerprint scanner for years, but it is not ready yet due to
technical issues.
With the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, Samsung retains the same security measure we have already seen on the S8/S8 Plus. Last year, the iPhone X introduced a new biometric security measure called Face ID, allowing users to quickly unlock their device with a simple glance.
Tech experts say that under-display fingerprint scanner offers better security for mobile devices. Sources claim that under-display scanner will hit more devices in the future, as iris or face scanner fail to work properly on mobile devices.
According to tech experts, Apple might include an in-display fingerprint scanner in 2019 iPhone models to boost sales performance. Last year, the Cupertino company moved away from the plan to integrate a scanner under the OLED display of the iPhone X due to supply issues. Sources say that Apple will remove Touch ID from its iPhone lineup in favor for in-display fingerprint scanner.
Samsung does not want to get left behind in the competition. The South Korean
company is expected to add under-display fingerprint scanner in its 2019 Galaxy
phones.
The Galaxy S9 and S9 were widely welcome by tech experts and users worldwide when they made their debut at Samsung’s launch event. The Galaxy S9 now costs $720 in the US, which is cheaper than the iPhone X. Tech experts say that a Galaxy flagship phone with under-display fingerprint scanner may cost more than $1000, just like the iPhone X.
